How To Build A Camera Drone That Doesn’t Require FAA Registration

The Hummingbird Drone weighs less than 250 grams, which keeps it off the FAA radar, but manages to carry the guts of a GoPro Hero4 Black along for the ride, providing a ton of video power in a very small package.

The Federal Aviation Administration requires you to register any drone that weighs more than .55 pounds, or 250 grams. (Click HERE for a guide on how to register your drone with the FAA.) If the drone weighs less than 250 grams, the FAA considers it a “children’s toys” and doesn’t require you to register it, and there are fewer restrictions over how you can use it.

Seeing an opportunity, Droneworks Studios decided to find out how much tech they could cram into a drone that weighs less than the 250 gram limit, and came up with the 368 Hummingbird Drone, named after Casey Neistat’s company, 368.

The Hummingbird Drone weighs less than 250 grams, but manages to carry the guts of a GoPro Hero4 Black along for the ride, giving you a ton of video power in a very small package. As a result, they were able to fly around New York City (a city that is normally very restrictive to regular drones) and created a video that highlights Casey Neistat’s new 368 offices:

The main limitation is that the battery only provides about 3 minutes of flight time, but because of its size, you can fly the 368 Hummingbird Drone through areas that no other drone is capable of.

If you’re interested in building your own 368 Hummingbird Drone, Droneworks Studios put together this great instructional video that covers all the steps:

In addition to some basic tools and a soldering iron, you will need:
